Chelsea Bags Updates

These are new instructions for replacing Timtex™ with Peltex® #70 to interface the Exterior of the bag and a fusible interfacing to hold the Peltex in place.

Please note that Timtex™ is now available again through C&T Publishing. You can use either Peltex® or Timtex™ to make your project.

Before getting started, please mark these changes on your instructions pages for each of the steps below. The information that has changed is highlighted in yellow.

NOTE: If you have an earlier printing of the Chelsea Bag pattern that calls for Pellon's® Craft Fuse® for the interfacing you will need updated instructions from us to be able to utilize these Peltex instructions. Please email dianneb@amybutlerdesign.com and we would be happy to send the instructions to you.

~Please add "Pressing cloth" to the Tools needed.

~In Step 2 under "From the Lightweight Fusible Interfacing" please make the changes highlighted below:
From the fusible Interfacing
-Cut 4 Main Panel Top pieces on the fold***
-Cut 2 Main Panels on the fold***
-Cut 1 Bottom Panel

C. Next, open one of the fabric Main Panels and use it as a full-size pattern piece to cut out the Peltex.

From the Peltex
-Cut 2 Main Panels
-Cut 1 Bottom Panel

~Please change the "Note" under Step 3 to read:
NOTE: In this step you are preparing all 4 Main Panels by pressing on the Interfacing which covers the top 4" of each panel. This will help support the top of the bags and reinforce the Handle openings. (2 Exterior and 2 Reversible side Main Panels.) Then, you will fuse the Peltex and fusible interfacing onto the Exterior Main Panels only and mark the clip lines at the bottom of all 4 Main Panels.

~Replace Step 3B through 3D with the instructions below.

B. Using your ruler and fabric marker, measure and mark 1" in from one long edge on the front Peltex Main Panel. Match the marks and draw a line across the panel. Use your scissors and cut along this line. Repeat this step to measure, mark and cut along one short edge on the same Peltex panel.

C. Repeat Step 3B to measure, mark and cut one long and one short edge from the second Peltex Main Panel and the Peltex Bottom Panel.

D. Next, center the first Peltex Main Panel on the WRONG side of one of the Exterior Main Panels. Then place the fusible side of the interfacing on top of the Peltex. Fuse it in place securing it around the exposed edges of the Exterior panel. Repeat to attach the Peltex panels to the other Exterior Main Panel and one of the Exterior Bottom Panels. NOTE: The other Exterior Bottom Panel will be used to make the False Bottom for your Bag.

~In Step 3E:
E. Mark the clip lines at the bottom raw edge of the Exterior Main Panels - On the Interfaced side of the first exterior Main Panel, starting at the bottom raw edge, measure 2" in from the left side edge and make a mark. Repeat this step to mark the clip line on the right side of the panel. (These marks are for clips you will make in Step 5D to shape the corners of the bags when attaching the Bottom Panel to the Main Panels.) Do not cut the clip lines yet! Repeat this step to mark the clip lines on the bottom raw edge of the second Exterior Main Panel. Repeat this step to mark the clip lines on the WRONG side of both of the Reversible side Main Panels.

~The updated illustration for this step is included below.

Step 3E

~Delete Steps 3F and 3G on the instruction pages.

~In Step 4, replace 4E and 4J with the instructions below.

E. Next, pin completely around the Handle opening to secure the Peltex to the Main Panel then, machine baste 1/8" to the outside and completely around the fold lines.
[Replace the text on the corresponding illustration to read the same as Step 4E.]

J. Turn the Main Panel over so the Interfaced side is facing up. Cut only the Peltex edges by trimming close to the basting line around the Handle Opening. Do not cut the Exterior fabric. You will use these edges of the Exterior fabric to fold over the Peltex to finish the Handle Opening.

~Continue with Step 4K through 4M to finish the Handle openings.

~The updated illustrations for Steps 4J, 4K and 4L are included below.

Step 4J

Step 4K

Step 4L

~In Step 4I replace the word "Timtex" with "Peltex".

~In Step 4K replace "Timtex" with "Interfaced".

~Change 5D and 5E to read:
D. On the Main Panel only (not the Bottom Panel), cut the clip lines you marked on the bottom of the first Exterior Main Panel back in Step 3E and 3F. (These marks should be at each end of your stitching line, do not cut the Peltex.) Cut up to the stitching line in the seam allowance making sure not to clip your stitching. This will allow the corners to turn neatly.

E. Repeat Steps 5A through 5D to attach the other side of the Bottom Panel to the second Exterior Main Panel.

~The updated illustrations for Step 5C, 5D, 5F and 5G are included below. The Large Tote illustrations are shown, the same changes are made for the Handbag.
