Rare Par Tola Kantha Quilts from Bangladesh
ELEGANT CHEVRON
48" W x 68" L
The Par Tola kanthas are created with millions of embroidery stitches that make up geometric patterns that can be simple or complex. No pattern is drawn and the stitching count is done from memory. These are considered rare because this kind of labrorious, handwork artform is being lost and not created anymore.
The ancient Bengali domestic craft of kantha emerged as a way of recycling items of old cotton clothing such as saris, lungis and dhotis into embroidered quilts, commonly known as kanthas. It was the folk art of the poor. Indeed, the name kantha comes from the Sanskrit term kontha, meaning rags. This is true of all the “kantha” we are sharing with you today
INTERESTING FACT: kanthas are embroidered together, not stitched together.
All kanthas are running stitch kanthas/ the running stitch is called kantha phor - this is actually an embroidery stitch that creates the “ rippled “ effect on the fabric surface
